The Tomb – The Silence of Waiting
Scripture: Matthew 27:57–66
Devotional
Joseph of Arimathea lays Jesus’ body in a tomb, and a large stone is rolled into place. It is final. Sealed. Guarded. What once held hope now feels like it holds only silence. The voices that cried “Hosanna” are gone. The miracles have stopped. Heaven seems quiet. For those who loved Jesus, this is the moment where hope feels buried—when all that was promised appears lost beneath the weight of grief.
This is the pain of waiting—the space between what God has said and what we can see. Nothing appears to be happening, yet everything is already in motion. The silence of Saturday is not the absence of God, but the hidden work of God. Good Friday invites us to sit in that tension—to trust that even when the stone is in place and the future feels sealed, God is not finished. In the waiting, hope is not gone… it is just unseen.
Reflective Questions
- Where in my life am I waiting in uncertainty?
- How can I learn to trust God’s work even in seasons of silence and waiting?
Prayer
God, In the silence of the tomb, when hope feels distant and the future unclear, teach me to trust You.
When the stone feels heavy and immovable, remind me that You are still at work.
Give me patience in the waiting and faith in the unseen.
Help me to hold onto hope, even when I cannot yet see resurrection.
In the quiet, draw me closer to You. Amen.
