Gethsemane – The Surrendered Will
Scripture: Matthew 26:36–46
Devotional
In the garden of Gethsemane, Jesus is overwhelmed with sorrow, even to the point of death. He falls facedown and prays, asking if the cup might pass from Him—yet ultimately surrendering: “Not as I will, but as You will.” This is raw, honest anguish paired with perfect obedience.
While Jesus wrestles in prayer, His closest friends cannot stay awake. In His moment of deepest distress, He is alone—and yet He chooses the cross. Good Friday reminds us that our salvation was not automatic; it was a surrendered “yes” in the face of unimaginable cost.
Reflective Questions
- Where in my life am I resisting God’s will, even though I sense what He is asking of me?
- How can I practice honest prayer like Jesus—bringing my real feelings to God while still choosing trust?
Prayer
Father,
In the garden, You saw Your Son’s anguish and His surrender.
Jesus, You understand sorrow, fear, and the weight of obedience.
Teach me to pray with honesty—to bring You my true feelings without holding back.
And in those moments of struggle, form in me a heart that still says, “Your will be done.”
When I feel weak or alone, remind me that You are near.
Give me strength to trust You, even when the path is hard.
Amen.
