Betrayal & Denial – The Cost of Fear
Scripture: Luke 22:47-62
Devotional
In the darkness of the garden, Judas approaches Jesus with a kiss—a sign of affection turned into betrayal. In the same night, Peter, full of earlier confidence, denies even knowing Jesus. One act is calculated, the other fearful, but both reveal how fragile human loyalty can be. Jesus is abandoned not just by enemies, but by those closest to Him.
Yet in the middle of it all, there is a quiet, powerful moment: “The Lord turned and looked straight at Peter.” Not a look of condemnation, but of knowing, sorrow, and love. Peter breaks down and weeps. Good Friday reminds us that even in our failure—our betrayal, our denial—Jesus sees us fully and does not turn away. His love remains steady, even when ours falters.
Reflective Questions
- Where might I be avoiding or redefining truth instead of listening to Jesus’ voice?
- In what ways am I tempted to choose what is easier or more comfortable over following Christ?
Prayer
Jesus, You stood in silence before accusation and spoke truth without fear.
You are the King whose kingdom is not of this world, and yet You came for me.
Forgive me for the times I turn away from Your truth or choose what is easier instead of what is right.
Open my ears to hear Your voice clearly.
Give me courage to follow You, even when it costs me something.
Help me to recognize You not just in words, but in the way I live.
Amen.
